Introductions, provide url for wiki and backchannel discussion that will be open throughout the session. Participants will create one learning goal for this session and reflect on it later in the session. Once participants have accessed the wiki they will post in the backchannel questions, concerns, and/or where they would like additional elaboration, as well as concrete suggestions for how activities throughout the session could inform their professional practice. One member of the 4-person facilitation team will monitor the backchannel at all times during the BYOL and cue other team members to add backchannel submissions into the conversation.
Possibly use voice thread as a demonstration of using it for goal setting. - Vivian will make one with model goals (affective, cognitive and personal learning goals).

(5 min.) Baseline Formative Assessment Data/Activate Prior Knowledge (Web based quiz) - Vivian starts, she will brainstorm questions and get criteria for higher order thinking question rubric - look for one online - this will be available as a resource not something we actively use at this point, perhaps a variety of them (K-3, 4-8, 9-12).
Use Google form or an online survey creation tool to collect closed and open-ended responses regarding participants’ understanding of formative assessment. Display results instantly in an associated spreadsheet on projector and within wiki. Point out information in the wiki that elaborates how to construct formative assessments that assess learner’s “knowledge state” (Hunt & Pellegrion, 2002).

(5 min.) Key Attributes of Formative Assessment - Vivian and Cara (look at what we did for TIES workshop0
State goals of BYOL, introduce Popham’s (2008) definition of formative assessment and how technology can support its implementation. Introduce the idea that there is a pedagogy associated with technology-enhanced formative assessment (Beatty & Gerace, 2009), i.e. the tool is not the formative assessment, it is the means of conducting/facilitating the formative assessment.

(10 min.) Making Sense of Formative Assessment Data (rubrics, spreadsheets) - Cara will lead and work with Vivian on questions rubric brainstorming
Participants will have the choice of using one or more rubric generator tools (one of which is demonstrated; others available via wiki) to create a rubric to assess their personal learning goal for this BYOL. Participants’ will be encouraged to explore additional rubric generators as time permits. Participants will be reminded to post questions/concerns that arise during the process in the backchannel. Facilitators will continue to move throughout the room and monitor the backchannel.

(15 min.) Formative Assessment - Checking Understanding That Can Inform Teaching (Online Quiz Generators) - Scott
One facilitator will demonstrate the use of an online quiz generator. Based on their experience and skill level, participants will have the choice of creating a 5-question quiz using the demonstrated tool or one of several others identified in the wiki. Participants have the option to switch seats in order to take each other’s quizzes or explore another quiz generator. Three facilitators will circulate throughout the room providing ongoing support while the fourth facilitator monitors the backchannel. Participants will reflect in the backchannel about what they are learning about formative assessment and the pedagogy of technology-enhanced formative assessment and/or what still remains confusing, unclear, and their questions.

How teachers can have students create the questions and teacher can use the results as well as the questions the students ask as formative assessment. (Classrooms as Learning Communities by Chris Watkins and Carl's example of a teacher at Harumbee (sp?)) -Vivian will type this up and add it to the page.
Take the quiz or use the checklist to provide feedback on the nature of the questions.
In the backchannel ask participants to suggest ways to use this as a more constructivist activity

Participants will participate in a poll regarding their current understanding of the concept of formative assessment, parts that they would want re-taught or additional practice with, and one open-ended question regarding a next step that they will take to increase their understanding/use of formative assessment after the BYOL. Following the sharing of the poll results, participants will have the opportunity to create their own poll from those provided on the wiki. Facilitators will then model reviewing the data to inform future instructional practice.
